Rauzan Ségla - Margaux 1999

Après un hiver froid et sec, le mois de mars est doux et le débourrement est enregistré fin mars. Le temps est chaud pour la saison et sec, mais les températures froides de mi-avril vont ralentir la pousse de la vigne. Ceci sera sans conséquences graves pour le vignoble car le mois de mai sera chaud et humide. La floraison débute fin mai-début juin dans de bonnes conditions climatiques. Juin et juillet permettront aux raisins une belle évolution mais l'arrivée d'un mois d'août pluvieux va ralentir la véraison. Le chaud mois de septembre viendra accélérer la maturité des raisins.
Fermentation alcoolique: Deux remontages par jour pendant la fermentation. Quelques remontages courts pendant la macération sur les meilleures cuves de Merlot et de Cabernet Sauvignon.
Macération : Fermentations 5 à 8 jours.
Cuvaison: Merlot : 18 à 23 jours. Cabernet Sauvignon : 18 à 27 jours
Elevage : 70% de barriques neuves - Descente en barriques fin novembre.

The 1999 Rauzan-Ségla is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep brick, the nose is fading slightly with coffee, old leather, tobacco and spice box notes on offer along with vague prunes and nutmeg notions. Medium-bodied with a decent core of mature fruit and a chewy texture, it finishes firmly and a little abruptly. Drink up! Drink 2020-2024.

Lots of spice, dried herbs, flowery incense, cedar, and assorted dark fruits emerge from the 1999 Rauzan-Ségla, which is built around 58% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with 40% Merlot and a splash of Petit Verdot. Fully mature, medium-bodied, nicely balanced, and elegant on the palate, this is drinking wonderfully today, and while it’s not going to improve, it will certainly hold nicely for another 7-8 years. Maturity 2019-2027.

The dark ruby/purple-colored 1999 Rauzan-Segla possesses medium to full body, impressive structure, moderate tannin, and excellent plum, black currant, and cherry fruit infused with camphor, earth, and iron characteristics. It is a substantial effort for the vintage. This is a 1999 that will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring, and keep for 15+.

Only 35% of the crop made it in to the 1999's final blend (58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot). It possesses a deep ruby/purple color, sweet blackberry and cherry aromas, a seductive entry on the palate, medium body, and a lush, consumer-friendly personality revealing neither austerity nor tannic astringency. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2015.

I keep waiting for the new owners to hit the bull's eye with this renowned estate, but that has yet to happen. The light to medium-bodied, dark ruby/purple-colored 1999 exhibits elegance and softness, little depth, and a superficial appeal. The finish is good, but uninspiring. I am convinced that far better wines could be produced at this estate. Nevertheless, this is a competent, correct effort that should drink well between 2002-2012.
