The 2016 Grandes Murailles, now of course owned by the Cuvelier family of Clos Fourtet, has a perfumed and quite intense bouquet, with dried rose petals and touches of incense infusing the red cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, cedar-tinged red berry fruit with a saline finish. This is an excellent Saint-Emilion, a Les Grandes Murailles built for the long-term.

The 2016 Les Grandes Murailles is a bit fuller and richer than it usually is, with a bit more oak influence than is typically the case. Inky blue and purplish fruit, lavender and a host of mineral-inflected notes are all present. At times, the Grands Murailles comes across as a smaller scaled and a more immediately accessible version of its sibling Clos Fourtet. Tasted three times.

This has a good fleshy feel, with layers of boysenberry and blackberry draping nicely. The toast is a touch overt through the finish, but there’s a good snap of licorice for range and more than enough stuffing here to soak it up. The structure is quite refined too.—J.M.
