The 2017 Château Brane-Cantenac should be a terrific wine and offers a medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, silky, elegant style. Loads of black raspberries, cedar pencil, and dried flower notes as well as sweet fruit, ripe tannin, and a complex, layered texture make for a classic Margaux that’s going to drink nicely for two decades.

Tiefes Purpur-granat mit violettem Rand, Offenes Bouquet mit frischen Alpenheidelbeeren und dufti-gen Cassisblüten, dahinter reife Pflaumen und Eisenkraut. Am geradlinigen Gaumen mit krâftigem, stützendem Tannin, mit guter Rasse und feinen Konturen. lm gebündelten Finale intensives Holundergelee im Rück-aroma. Setzt dieses Jahr voll auf Finesse, kommt aber nicht ganz an den Vorjahres- erfolg heran.

Très beau fruit mûr et épanoui tirant sur la rose. La bouche est superbe de finesse et d’élégance, veloutée, texturée, ne laissant apparaître sa vinosité et sa structure qu’en finale. Superbes tanins.

The 2017 Brane-Cantenac opens with a good burst of fruit, but then loses some intensity in its mid-palate and finish as the tannins clamp down on the fruit. In this tasting, the 2017 comes across as a bit slender. Some of that may be attributable to the relatively high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (74%) in the blend. Two thousand seventeen is also the first vintage to include Petit Verdot. All those details aside, the 2017 is an attractive Brane-Cantenac built on persistence.

Offering an intoxicating mélange of floral, earthy and spicy scents along with cedar, tobacco and black raspberry notes, it’s very apparent something brilliant is about to happen. In the glass, you’ll find elegance and refinement. The fruits are on the red side but the tannins are so delicate, the juice so plentiful, that attention is elsewhere. From a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the wine reached 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.76. It represents 60% of the harvest. The higher than usual percentage of the Grand Vin is due to the frost, which hit the parts of the vineyard customarily reserved for the second wine. The harvest took place from September 14 to October 10.

The 2017 Brane-Cantenac was picked from 14 September to 2 October at 31.2hl/ha after frost destroyed 35% of the vines in April. It is matured in 75% new oak and 25% one-year old and it has 13% alcohol. It has a tightly wound bouquet with broody black fruit, tar and a touch of graphite, very Pauillac in style as usual. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very linear and precise, not a deep Margaux and unashamedly classic in style with dry, slightly brusque tannin. The finish is dominated by tobacco and pencil lead notes with healthy pinch of pepper on the aftertaste. Classic Brane-Cantenac through and through. Tasted on three occasions.

A lovely wine that sits extremely prettily though the palate, with a seductive expression of florality and blackberry fruits. It's not as powerful as the past two years, but is skilfully worked with soft grilled oak notes. It doesn't sacrifice the excellent quality that this estate has been producing.

While the wood flavors are palpable in this wine, so are the firm tannins and dense black fruit. These elements suggest a wine that will have power and great concentration while also generous blackberry fruits. Drink from 2024.

A light singed alder hint leads the way here, along with light bay leaf and savory notes, while the core of gently steeped black cherry and plum fruit fills in slowly. Shows modest intensity through the finish but the flavors knit nicely.—J.M.
