Château Palmer - Margaux 2007

2007 will be remembered as a particularly demanding year for the considerable amount of work that the vintage has required throughout the vegetative period and maturation, and until the harvest. Bud bursting started early in late March, and vegetative growth took more than a week ahead during an exceptionally hot and dry April. From the end of April, and until the end of August, we have generally experienced a cool and humid climate. After a cool and rainy month of May, the good sunny and dry weather of the first dekad of June allowed a good start of flowering. No excessive run-off, but a long, relatively long bloom due to the cool, rainy weather after June 10th. This cool and wet climate continued until the end of August. The persistence of this humid climate, however, has caused a very strong and constant pressure of late blight: if it has been perfectly controlled, it has however required a considerable amount of work, constant attention, and a permanent worry that we are not ready forget! The veraison started early, from July 14, but lasted longer than usual, especially on Cabernets. At the end of August, during our first tastings of the berries, the grapes showed however a very beautiful aromatic potential. Vinification took place without any particular difficulty. Of course, they also required careful attention to adapt the fermentation temperatures, the pumping over and the maceration time to each batch. The wines have a beautiful structure, they are elegant and the tannins show great finesse. The degrees of alcohol are classic, around 12.5% ??vol.

Bright ruby-red. Lovely lift to the aromas of raspberry, Asian spices and flowers. Supple and intensely flavored, with an almost pinot-like silkiness of texture to its red fruit and spice fla vors. Very graceful, lush wine with real depth and brea dth. Finishes subtle, gripping and long.

A blend of 49% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Petit Verdot, the 2007 Palmer possesses a dense ruby/purple color as well as attractive smoky charcoal, blackberry, and plum aromas, good purity, excellent texture, and a soft, fleshy mouthfeel. It should drink well for 10-12 years.... Drink 2010-2022

An interesting combination of black licorice, light toasty oak and wet earth. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a delicately fruity finish, along with smoky wood. This has a very silky palate, with a lovely texture. Very polished. Best after 2012.

(49% merlot, 44% cabernet sauvignon and 7% petit verdot; includes 12% press wine) Good deep ruby. Pure, scented aromas of blackberry and violet. Rich and chewy if a bit backward and sullen today, with flavors of blackberry, dark chocolate and licorice. Dry, classic and light on its feet. This should gain in complexity with elevage

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, jugendliche Reflexe, violetter Rand.

A deep purple/garnet core. The nose is very backward at first, but there is good fruit intensity and no sign of any under-ripeness. Good selection here. Blackberry, a touch of kirsch and violets. The palate is an understated entry, but do not let this fool you because there are certainly some robust tannins here married with some earthy blackberry fruits, a touch of sea salt with a cedary, tobacco infused finish which is more Cabernet than usual. Tasted April 2008.

Very deep crimson. Rather more drama and concentration on the nose than Alter Ego has. Reasonably sumptuous. Very sweet, really very obviously low acidity. Not desperately appetising. Pretty round and soft. Very polished. 12.5%. Very unusual mixture of old-fashioned structure (low alcohol) with modern texture and much less acidity than in the old days. Quite distinctive! At Palmer the second wine seemed particularly successful – having the freshness that was not so evident on the grand vin. Compare with the Pavillon Rouge below.

Very pretty, with blackberry, light vanilla and a coffee bean character. Medium-to-full body, with ultrafine tannins and a long, clean finish. —J.S.
