Château Haut Batailley - Pauillac 2011

The 2011 is marked by an original and original climatology: a vintage without spring, leaping directly from winter to summer! A very early start of the vegetation at the end of March, followed by an exceptionally early bloom in mid-May, astonished the most experienced winemakers, thus envisaging a record of precocity for these grape harvests. The month of June marked by changing weather, warmer than the average but still very dry, slows the growth of the vine. Nevertheless, two of the conditions that make the beautiful vintages of Bordeaux were already met: an early and rapid flowering, and a beginning of "water stress" forcing the vine to slow its growth. Veraison began during July in a slightly humid climate and cooler than normal. Then the month of August became more classic and the beautiful month of September allowed the grapes, and especially the Cabernets Sauvignons, to perfect their maturity. The harvest took place with summer temperatures preserving the quality of the berries and increasing their concentration. Aged in French oak barrels (fine grain) with 60% new wood.

Good medium ruby.  Aromas of dark berries, violet and licorice.  Sappy, serious and deep, offering nicely delineated flavors of blackberry, spices and fresh herbs.  Firmly structured and extremely well balanced, and juicy on the persistent finish.  This very pretty wine avoids the green notes typical of the vintage.

Haut-Batailley always seems to represent a synthesis in style between St.-Julien and Pauillac. The silky 2011 possesses dark red and black fruits, medium body, good purity and texture, and reasonable depth. It is not a big wine, but is a well-made effort to drink over the next 10-15 years.

Very perfumy and elegant for Pauillac, with a pretty rose petal hint backed by bitter cherry, red currant and bergamot notes. Offers a long, fine-grained, iron-lined finish. Should age pleasantly into a mineral-driven version. Best from 2015 through 2025.

A wine with extremely integrated fruit-tannin balance, with berry, currant and mineral character. It’s so polished and pretty. Full body, juicy fruit and a fresh finish. Needs five to six years of age to soften.

As always, in 2011, the Haut-Batailley is more seductive and St.-Julien in style than other Pauillacs. Its deep ruby/plum color is followed by soft, savory red and black currant notes, decent acidity and ripe tannin. Drink this mid-weight, ethereal-styled Pauillac over the next decade.

Well-expressed, almost crunchy, fruit, clear and refreshing flavours, a charmingly elegant Pauillac. Drink 2015-2025. (17 points)

A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot, the Haut-Batailley has a leathery, earthy bouquet with a pleasant herbaceous edge, a hint of small dark cherries developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy, tertiary, saline entry. There is something agreeably briny at its core with a smooth, understates finish that lacks the length of the 2009 and 2010, but that is to be expected. Classic claret: no more, no less. 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, on deep coarse gravel. 60% new oak. Deep crimson. Fresh, leafy but not green. Refreshing and lively, even at the end of a long day's tasting. Lightish, fresh and juicy, nice cool Cabernet. Light, fine tannins. (JH)

Very pretty length to this with silky tannins and a juicy finish. Medium to full body, with fine tannins and a fresh acidity.
