Château Les Carmes Haut Brion - Pessac-Léognan 2006

2006 was marked by the beginning of September having broken records of sunshine, an exceptional sweetness that, accompanying the maturity of the grape berries to perfection, allowed the property of the exemplary grape harvests. Combining the merlot qualities of a remarkable intensity greater than the already unreal 2005, and Cabernets francs and subtle sauvignons with incomparable aromatic freshness. Thanks to the small size of our vineyard and its situation we harvested very early, this to our advantage because it allowed to pass "between the drops". Indeed the rain settled from September 20, the day the property finished. The grapes we harvested were very healthy and well walled, with important records of Merlot and early harvest dates, the 2006 vintage was a great success. He gave a wine of great elegance but also a tannic structure able to evolve a great wine of guard. Finally, this vintage, presents a very complex aromatic game (black cherry, raspberry, spices, cedar ...) that will seduce a lot and will compete without problem with our 2005.

Tasted at the château in Bordeaux. The 2006 Carmes Haut-Brion has fine clarity and definition on the nose with blackberry, bilberry a touch of peppermint and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation and better balance than the 2001. Fresh and lively with fine tannins, bright dark cherry and strawberry fruit at its core with a little spice and white pepper towards the supple finish. Give this one or two more years. Tasted November 2012.

Savoury, mildly toasty nose. Then very sweet and luscious. Slightly drying finish but with lots of energy. Just fades a bit fast on the end. Drink 2016-2028

Displays floral and raspberry aromas, with wet stone. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, flavourful finish. Stylish. Very well-made. Best after 2011.

Another beautiful example of minerality, finesse, elegance, and complexity, this earthy, spicy 2006 exhibits sweet raspberry and red currant fruit accompanied by hints of barbecue smoke and tobacco leaf. Medium-bodied, pure, and not terribly powerful, it is built around delicacy and purity. Give it 2-4 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 15 years.

An elegant, finesse-styled 2006, Les Carmes should put on weight given the fact that it includes a significant amount of Cabernet Franc in the blend. It offers fresh cherry, red, and black currant aromas interwoven with notions of mint, dusty, loamy soil, and burning embers. Medium-bodied, fresh, and pure, with moderate tannin as well as excellent depth, it may merit an outstanding rating if it puts on weight in the barrel and bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2022.

Mid crimson and not especially concentrated colour. A little oak in evidence on the slightly smudgy nose and then there is a lot of acidity and greenness on the palate. Definitely an awkward wine that I fear will always have this unripe streak.

Vibrantly fruity wine that shows freshness. It has lift, fresh black currants, layers of acidity, while the tannins hide in the background. —R.V.

Pleasant, with good clean berry and cherry fruit, a medium body and silky tannins.
