Château Beaumont - Haut-Médoc 2018

L’hiver 2017-2018, caractérisé par des températures froides et de fortes pluies, a permis au sol d’emmagasiner de précieuses réserves en eau.
Le printemps, très pluvieux, a eu pour effet une importante pression de mildiou. Nos terroirs gravelo-sableux ont par la suite bénéficié d’un été très chaud et sec qui nous a permis d’obtenir des maturités optimales mais qui a eu également pour effet de déshydrater les baies.

The 2018 Beaumont suffered mildew and then drought, and yields were consequently reduced to 33hl/ha. It was showing a lot of oak on the nose when I tasted it, perhaps dominating the fruit too much at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that create a smooth texture. This is matured in around 30% new oak; I wonder if less might have been better. I would like to see more of the wine once in bottle.

The 2018 Beaumont is dark, racy and voluptuous from the very first taste. Dark chocolate, plum, cedar, cloves and leather all infuse an attractive, succulent Haut-Médoc. The blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, and it is the Merlot that really seems to give the wine its mid-palate texture and overall depth.

With a blast of dark cocoa, black cherry, herbs and tobacco, this medium bodied, forward, fresh Medoc wine will be great for early drinking pleasure.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Beaumont leaps from the glass with vibrant black and red cherries and warm cassis notes plus an undercurrent of bay leaves, lavender and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, firm and grainy, the mid-palate is taut and muscular with plenty of energy and an herbal lift on the finish.
