The 2013 Grand-Mayne has a respectable blackberry and cranberry leaf nose, a little more gumption than its peers with good definition if not show-stopping complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins cloaked in decent fruit, no sign of any greenness and a sense of roundness on the finish. One of the best Saint Emilion wines even if Jean-Antoine Nony's wine does not match its impressive showing from barrel.

This 2013’s blue/plum color is followed by notes of raspberries, dark cherries, incense and crushed rock, good fruit, medium body, and an attractive, somewhat superficial but pleasant style. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

Good red-ruby.  Bright aromas of minty red cherry, licorice and minerals, with suggestions of exotic fruits.  Moderately dense and fresh, but with vibrant, very precise flavors of red cherry, licorice, spices and wet stone.  This rather elegantly styled, perfumed wine finishes bright and firmly tannic but lacks the length for a higher score.

Herbal, green and sour, this is a clumsy wine with very unattractive finish and no real fruitiness. Blunt.

Blackcurrant fruit but not a whole lot else. Quite firm and furry on the palate. Good fruit definition – no greenness. Basic, enjoyable, simple.

Firm yet well-integrated tannins give the 2013 Grand Mayne its backbone and persistence. Iron, smoke, red cherry and menthol notes develop in the glass, adding complexity, but the Grand Mayne remains a bit compact and unyielding at this stage. Sweet red berries and flowers linger on the powerful, intense finish.

The Grand Mayne is a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a sweet vanillary bouquet with candied orange peel interlacing the red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins that bolster this Saint Emilion, lending it a fine masculine finish with vibrant black fruit that linger in the mouth. Good potential.

Direct, with cherry, pomegranate and raspberry notes lined with spice details. Shows a slightly firm woodsy edge through the finish, but the fruit remains pure. —J.M.

This wine is overripe, showing jammy fruit flavors as well as dry tannins that don’t quite work together in harmony.
