This has a light nose of raspberry, bacon fat and animal scents. The palate has a ripe entry, quite tannic with good depth although it comes over a little one-dimensional although there is a pleasant touch of pain grille on the earthy finish. A little conservative, but not a bad effort. Drink now-2012. Tasted November 2008.

At several tastings, this wine was disappointing, despite the fact that the winemaking consultant is Stephane Derenoncourt’s wife, Christine. Deep ruby-colored, but light, diluted, and lacking concentration and depth, this blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc needs to be drunk during its first 7-8 years of life.

Chocolate, spice and cherry aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with velvety tannins and a medium finish. Refined and pretty. Best after 2010. 3,500 cases made.

Christine Derenoncourt, the wife of one of Bordeaux’s leading winemaking gurus, Stephane Derenoncourt, has fashioned one of the finest wines La Tour Figeac has yet produced. A blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc from a bio-dynamically farmed vineyard, and produced from yields of 22.5 hectoliters per hectare, this is a gorgeously fragrant 2004 offering scents of incense, black cherries, raspberries, currants, and notions of white chocolate as well as earth. With a lush, medium to full-bodied texture, surprising opulence, good acidity, and a layered finish, this impressive offering should drink well for 12-15 years. Moreover, it should be reasonably priced.
