Des notes de lanoline, de cire, de chèvrefeuille et de fruits tropicaux mûrs jaillissent littéralement du verre, annonçant ce vin corsé, fortement marqué par le botrytis et étayé par une heureuse acidité. L’ensemble, qui déploie une finale longue, puissante et généreuse, est encore fermé, mais il présente à mon sens un très bon potentiel de garde. A boire entre 2007 et 2030.

Tasted blind at Farr’s Sauternes 2002 horizontal. More pale in colour for a 2002 Sauternes. It has a strange, slightly reductive, sulphury nose that is rather malodorous. The palate is better, good weight, attractive viscous texture with a touch of ginger interwoven into the honeyed, marmalade and apricot fruit. Harmonious but linear, finishing with a light, spicy kick of ginger. This is a competent Suduiraut on the palate, but the wine as a whole is let down by the nose. Drink now-2013. Tasted October 2009.

Ultraclean, with apple, vanilla and honey aromas that follow through to a full-bodied palate, medium sweetness and a long, caressing finish. Delicate and balanced. Best after 2007.

A beautifully balanced sauternes. With intense elegant aromas, fine apricot and pineapple, its lushness is balanced by purity and a long, almost raisiny finish. Drink 2008-30.

I suspect most readers will find it hard to get excited about the 2002 vintage for the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes after what appears to be a prodigious 2001. However, 2002 is a very fine year for this region, possibly superior to any of the vintages between 2000 and 1991. The wines possess plenty of botrytis, but neither the impressive definition nor supreme elegance of the 2001s. This is a sweet, full-bodied, fat, concentrated, intense effort that was showing well in September, 2003.
