Very dark crimson. Some rather good oak in evidence here - possibly too much so for some tastes. Rather constructed and without real core but the result is a decent mouthful of fruit. Drink 2012-2018

This offers Black Forest Cake, with hints of stone and earth on the nose. Full- to medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a clean chocolate and berry aftertaste. Best after 2012.

One of the two stars of Bernard Magrez’s St.-Emilion empire (the other being the luxury cuvee of Magrez-Fombrauge), the 2006 Fombrauge is a soft, round, spicy effort displaying plenty of oak, earth, and ripe red currant and black cherry fruit. This pretty, alluring, charming effort is best drunk over the next 7-8 years. It is a blend of 77% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon.

Nez riche, harmonieux et de belle complexité, tout comme la bouche dont la texture dense, serrée, laisse entrevoir un excellent potentiel de garde.

The appellation’s largest vineyard, Fombrauge is run with great precision and passion by Bordeaux entrepreneur, Bernard Magrez (whose flagship estate is Pape-Clement). The 2006 Fombrauge reveals pure notes of raspberries, cherries, flowers, pain grille, and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, spicy, pure, and elegant, it should drink well young, and last for 10-12 years.

Tasted privately with a negotiant. A very reserved nose, difficult to coax any aromas from the glass. Full-bodied, high extraction with sweet ripe black fruits and vanillary oak. Overtly modern in style but for me, lacking some vivacity and finesse. It may improve as there is nice purity, but it lacks personality.

Bernard Magrez wine – a bit tired on the nose, very overwrought and as though a superconcentrate of the original fruit. Marked acidity. Very hard work. I tasted another sample where the fruit was definitely fresher even though the tannins were pretty tough. A third, freshly opened bottle (thank you, Dourthe) had rather neutral fruit and great thickness if not definition. I don’t think I could unreservedly recommend this wine but I ended up raising my score from 15 to 16.

Owned by Bernard Magrez, this modern, smooth wine has impressive layers of new wood and mint aromas, with a tough, solid core. —R.V.

Very good for the vintage, with licorice and mineral character. Medium- to full-bodied, with good tannin structure and a medium finish.
