Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château, the 1998 Brane-Cantenac is a blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 56% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. It has a very herbaceous bouquet: tobacco and damp earth/peat that is potent but lacking requisite fruit after 18 years. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin, moderate weight, but it is missing some substance towards a very austere finish. I feel that this 1998 is on a downward slope, so I suggest drinking bottles in the near future rather than affording them extended cellaring. Tasted March 2016.

Approximately 56% of the harvest made it into the grand vin. A blend of 56% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, this dark ruby-colored wine offers a fragrant bouquet of licorice, earth, smoke, and herb-tinged black fruits. Medium-bodied, rich, and deep, with a seductive personality, the wine finishes with moderate tannin. A very classy wine! Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.

Subtle aromas of violet, berry and crushed raspberry. Medium- to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, fine finish. Tasted good from barrel, but it's outstanding now. Incredible effort from this estate. Best after 2007. 10,000 cases made.

The finest Brane-Cantenac produced in nearly two decades, this dark ruby/purple-colored 1998 possesses excellent concentration, and sweet, candied black fruits intertwined with smoke, grilled herbs, and toast. It exhibits clean winemaking, a sweet mid-palate, and soft but firm tannin in the moderately long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.

Brane-Cantenac appears to have recognized the potential problems of over-extraction, producing a charming, supple wine with excellent fruit as well as sweet blackberry and cassis aromas with notes of dried herbs and earth. It is a light-styled, well-balanced, alluring Margaux that should drink well upon release, and keep for 10-12 years.
