Pure merlot with plenty of berry and stone character. Medium-bodied with round tannins that spread across the palate. Creamy texture and a delicious, savory finish. 40% no wood. So drinkable now.

The 2019 Mondot derives from Merlot growing on newly acquired vineyards on Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau that can't be included in the grand vin until the region's new classification is finalized. Offering up aromas of wild berries, rose petals and coniferous forest floor, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and succulent, with a supple, charming profile and a penetrating finish.

The 2019 Mondot is plush, silky and delicious, just as it was en primeur. Bright red-toned fruit, cinnamon, mint, crushed rocks, blood orange and exotic spice lend gorgeous primary intensity. Soft contours and bright acids give the 2019 tons of appeal and sheer vibrancy. Aging 60% in barrel and 40% in tank, is an approach that preserves quite a bit of freshness.

The 2019 Mondot, which comes from specific parcels, has an open-knit bouquet of raspberry preserve and cranberry scents – strangely, almost as if there is no SO2. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and candied, with light tannins and a sweet orange peel and marmalade-tinged finish. This should drink well for several years.

Such a sense of the limestone terroir on the nose and palate here with wet stone and graphite nuances edged with perfumed red cherries. Super smooth with a grippy but gentle texture. Well integrated tannins are lifted by the serious succulence on the mid palate, this is juicy and bright but also layered with strawberry, red cherry and blueberry fruit. Playful but also well controlled and well presented. The finish is lasting and impactful. A perky wine that is stylish and so moreish.

Mondot is 100% Merlot, coming this year from an entirely different set of blocks on the Troplong Mondot estate than the grand vin, consisting largely of limestone. So, essentially, it is not a second wine, in that it does not use any declassified fruit this year. With its own vineyard, per se, its own distinct personality really shines through this year. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Mondot drifts effortlessly out of the glass with notes of fresh red and black plums, mulberries and stewed cherries with touches of rose hip tea, cinnamon toast and dusty soil. The medium to full-bodied palate has a racy backbone of freshness lifting the perfumed red and black fruits in the mouth, with plush tannins accented by a compelling bit of chewiness, finishing long and spicy.

The 2019 Mondot is racy and voluptuous to the core. Sweet red cherry, plum, spice, blood orange and floral notes give the 2019 lovely brightness to play off the radiant fruit. Medium in body and perfumed, with plenty of textural richness, Mondot is a gorgeous second wine. The 2019 Mondot is 100% Merlot from soils on limestone from the former Clos La Barde, which Troplong Mondot acquired in 2018. Aging is in neutral oak. Troplong Mondot has undergone a radical transformation since 2017 under the stewardship of Managing Director Aymeric de Gironde. Today, picking is earlier, there is greater focus on a parcel by parcel approach at harvest, no SO2 is used until barreling down, and for the first time, none of the malolactic fermentation was done in oak. Harvest took place from September 10 through October 7. De Gironde was among the managers who reported clusters of uneven ripeness, but added he is more comfortable with that than he might have been a few years ago, a way of thinking that is becoming more common in Bordeaux. In tasting, Troplong Mondot remains a big, broad-shouldered Saint-Émilion, but now it also has more energy and vibrancy than in the past.

The 2019 Mondot has a fragrant bouquet of raspberry and cranberry, pure and uncomplicated, with a light marine scent surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a little chewiness on the entry. Sappy red fruit in situ, veins of black fruit laced with sea salt and black pepper towards the finish. Fine, but it will need 18-24 months in bottle.
