Inglenook, Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley 2020

Excellent canopy growth protected the fruit during the short stints of summer heat that led to 2020’s early veraison. Harvest for this wine was fairly compressed, beginning with the Boardwalk Merlot block on September 7th, and concluding with Red Barn Clone 337 on September 28th. Practicing organic farming since the 1980’s, Inglenook was one of the first Napa Valley vineyards to be certified organic in 1994. Experi
mentation is embedded in Inglenook’s DNA, and within this ongoing evaluation, considerations of climate change, vine age, vintage and other factors reiterate that an estate of Inglenook’s caliber and quality is forever a work-in-progress. Winemaker’s Tasting Notes
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is striking in appearance, with its garnet color and youthful purple edge. The wine reveals vibrant expressions of crushed cherry, cedar, and red currant, as well as suggestions of forest floor and bay leaf. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, exhibiting both considerable energy and elegance. Every glass of Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon recalls the more than 140 years of Cabernet Sauvignon creation at Inglenook, taking you through the Chateau and its rich winemaking history that continues today.

Tasted twice, this note largely drawn from the second tasting. Very sunny. This feels immediately like a warm vintage new world wine. Initially, a little baked, but with aeration and, above all the second time, the saline notes lift this. More interesting on the palate and fresher, but still a little un-delineated. Big. Bold. Broad. Punchy. Iron-rich. Rather chewy and the tannins will need a long time to resolve. There’s just enough freshness here, but there’s no mistaking the heat of the summer.

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, with 1.5% Merlot in the blend, is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of creme de cassis, blackberry pie, and black cherry compote jump from the glass with touches of Indian spices and potpourri. The medium-bodied palate is laden with fragrant black fruit preserves, supported by plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with a spicy lift.

Tobacco, dark chocolate and blackcurrants on the nose, something quite meaty and savoury about the nose too. Succulent and juicy, really quite lightly framed despite the concentration, tannins are well integrated and support the crisp blueberry and black cherry fruit. Supple with a nice energy and bounce, doesn't feel too hot or too much, balanced and harmonious. An enjoyably cool finish too - overall impressive construction and length. Super lively, juicy and delineated. Tobacco, cedar and liquorice mark the finish suggesting this needs time to age and soften but this has excellent potential and should age gracefully. Ageing 20 months in French oak, 50% new. Winemaker Philippe Bascaules. Drinking Window: 2026 - 2040

Dark ruby velvet in colour, earthy and concentrated, showing concentrated and muscular Cabernet typicity with its cassis and bilberry fruits, ink, graphite and tar, softened by violet flowers, grilled sandalwood and cedar. Great quality, delicious, intense and drawn out, give it a few years to fully open up. 95ha, director Todd Devincenzi, winemaker Philippe Bascaules.

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon stands out for being virtually equal to the Rubicon at a fraction of the price. While moderately less complex, it delivers waves of black cherries without any of the vintage's characteristic coarseness. Instead, it's medium to full-bodied, supple-creamy in feel and long, with a fine dusting of a cocoa powder making an appearance on the finish.

Crushed black and red currants with flowers such as red roses and violets. Full-bodied with layers of medium velvety tannins. Lovely depth and richness. Broad. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is potent and brooding in feel. According to winemaker Chris Phelps there is no smoke taint in the 2020, but there is no getting past the harsh tannins and a harsh mouthfeel that is out of context, even for wines that were bottled in 2020. The finish is compact and aggressive. There is little pleasure to be found here, unfortunately.
