Château Palmer - Margaux 2001 b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

A particularly mild and wet winter was followed by a rapid onset of vegetation in March. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Flowering took place quickly in May and June (mid-flowering reached June 2) with mild and very dry weather. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Despite a cool and particularly rainy month of July, the veraison took place in good conditions, before a major storm on August 15 (mid-veraison on August 9). b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca August was warm, without excess, followed by cooler weather again in September. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca On the eve of the harvest, the sanitary conditions in the vineyard were perfect. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca The warm and beautiful weather in October made it possible for each plot to wait for the optimum level of maturity. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca Sugar richness is high, greater than 2000 and close to that of 1999, and phenolic richness reaches a very good level, higher than 1999. b5952cb1c3ab96cb3c8c63cfb3dccaca

Alder and cedar aromas waft up from the core here, giving this a perfumed, incense-accented edge, while the silky but substantial structure lets the gently mulled plum, black currant and cherry flavors glide through. Shows a sanguine tang at the very end, displaying latent grip for further evolution. Drink now through 2030. NA cases made.

A virile, muscular effort for this estate, the 2001 Palmer (a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot) exhibits a saturated purple color to the rim. Although closed and backward, it is surprisingly powerful, layered, and formidably endowed, revealing hints of charcoal, black fruits, earth, and underbrush. There is a lot going on in this offering, but it needs 5-7 years of cellaring to resolve its high tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.

Extremely pretty, with flowers, berries, chocolate and spices. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and ripe, silky tannins; long and caressing. Beautiful. Palmer shows wonderful refinement. Best after 2009.

The 2001 Palmer, a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, reveals a saturated purple color in addition to a gorgeous perfume of melted road tar intermixed with spring flowers, smoky blackberries, and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, with high tannin as well as tremendous fat, density, and length, this wine continues to gain weight and look better and better every time I go back to it. It should come close to rivaling the compelling 2000. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.

The 2001 reveals less power and muscle than the 2000, and possibly less charm than the 1999. This blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a stylish nose of flowers, black fruits, and new oak. It offers a sweet attack, medium body, moderate tannin, and a crisp finish. Surprisingly, the acidity is lower in the 2001 than in the 2000. Fifty percent of the crop made it into the final blend. Yields were 44 hectoliters per hectare. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015.

Raspberries and cherries, with chocolate and currants. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a fresh and long finish. Lively and rich. Tightly knit.
