A very deep garnet core, even more opaque than the millennial wine. The nose is very intense with great definition: blackberry, tobacco, a touch of sea salt and white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins, blackberries, tobacco, a hint of game and mulberry with a sweet touch of liquorice on the finish. Very well-balanced, still backward and with firm tannic grip on the finish. Very fine. Drink 2012-2030 Tasted March 2008.

Sweet notions of plums, black currants, caramel, and spicy oak are provocative and alluring. Subtle but substantial, layered, and textured, with medium body as well as sexy, up-front flavors, low acidity, and ripe tannin, this beauty is among the most evolved and flamboyant of the appellation. Nevertheless, it should age well. Anticipated maturity: now-2016.

Smoky and rich with lots of spice and berries. Medium- to full-bodied, with very good tannins with soft and silky texture and a medium finish. Not as impressive in bottle as barrel, but outstanding. Best after 2008. 20,000 cases made. –

Showing well and continuing to add weight and depth, the 2001 Leoville Poyferre has a saturated ruby/purple color and an elegant, sweet nose of black cherries, cassis, vanilla, and espresso in a dense, layered, ripe, suave/savory style. The wine should be drinkable relatively early and last for 15 or more years.

This St.-Julien is a fine effort for the vintage. The wine exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as sweet black currant fruit that has not yet taken on additional nuances, medium body, excellent purity, and an elegant, moderately weighty style. The tannin is ripe in this well-delineated, pure, finesse-styled Leoville Poyferre. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2013.
