The Carillon of the Angelus - Château Angélus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2016

Three months of summer without water: from memory of winemaker, we had never seen that! This surprising climatology, these incredible conditions, promised us a great vintage, unpredictable, unexpected. Until June 20, the weather has not spared us, imposing a very abundant rainfall, about 750mm, which corresponds to the cumulative rainfall of a dry year in Bordeaux ... Despite these conditions, the bloom was well spent. Since the last week of June, the weather has settled and, extremely rare, did not leave us until the harvest. We had a sunny July but rather cool with cold nights. And not a drop of water. August saw temperatures rise with a few days of heat wave, beyond 35 degrees. However, the day / night amplitude was 2 to 1 during the whole month, which is very favorable for the aromatic expression of our grapes and the maintenance of the freshness of the fruit. Added to this was a near absence of rain, 5 to 8mm, which is not the bare minimum to allow the plant to hydrate. It was then that the very young vines began to suffer. Older vines, especially on clay soils, have stood out beautifully. In September, the summer continued and with him the heat, without storm. A beneficent rain in mid-September has given energy, strength and breathing to the vineyard, the good weather has returned very quickly. The maturation of the tannins was slow. The peaceful and à la carte harvesting took place from October 4th to 21st. 2016 is a vintage radiant in the image of this incredible summer that has shaped its identity and decided its destiny.

Le second d'Angélus développe une personnalité de plus en plus affirmée et autonome. Très parfumé, fin, floral, il associe une allonge de grand vin à un corps charmant.

Onctueux et séveux, belle finesse. Un second vin de très grande dimension.

The 2016 Le Carillon d'Angelus, which represents a higher percentage of the total production this year, has a tightly wound blackberry and briary-scented bouquet with admirable delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, harmonious and rounded in style with just the right amount of salinity on the finish to beckon you back for another sip. This is a lovely Deuxième Vin built to give pleasure.

The 2016 Le Carillon d'Angélus is plump, juicy and open-knit. In 2016 Merlot is a bit more pronounced than it has been in the past, while there is no Cabernet Sauvignon. Ripe, silky tannins add to an impression of total finesse. Dark red cherry, mocha and plum are pushed forward in this succulent, giving Saint Émilion.

(75 Merlot, 25 Cabernet Franc, 10 Cabernet Sauvignon) | 50% new oak | 13.5% - 14% alc. Very tight and reined in but very impressive and singular with superb control and élan. The oak is firm but not too drying and the fruit is sumptuous. This will work well in due course. 17+

Rather sumptuous nose. Tarry start with lots of sweet black fruit and drama. Pretty tight and for the moment hard work, but it should relax with time.16.5+

Barrel Sample. This is a well-balanced and beautifully structured wine. Its acidity is impressive, while the spicy tones and fruity richness combine with the tannins to yield a structured yet fruity wine. It will age well over the medium term.

This is a fantastic second wine with walnut, berry, stone and bark character. The texture is really excellent with a chewy yet ultra-polished mouthfeel. Long and intense. Better than the 2015.
