Weeks of sunshine preceded an entirely healthy harvest, leading to high expectations that have been fulfilled. This is still opaque red in colour, the resplendent black-fruit nose accompanied by toasty oak, though still a bit reserved. Very rich and velvety, it is highly concentrated with lavish tannins. Broad-shouldered and chocolatey, it has moderate acidity and is now beginning to open up, though it remains imposing and a bit monumental. Textured and long.

The 2005 Pichon Baron has a dense ruby/purple color, sweet crème de cassis fruit, lots of cedar wood and forest floor, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a long finish of a good 30+ seconds. This is a beauty and one of the most successful Pauillacs of this vintage. Drink it now through 2035.

Dark crimson. A much more substantial nose than the Pichon Lalande. Polished and with fruit overwhelming the tannic charge. Rather racy and flattering. Very dry, savoury finish. 13.5% Drink 2020-2040(17.5+)

Tasted single blind at Southwold. This does not quite have the same lift on the nose as the Les Forts or Carruades but with aeration I am certain it would have offered more. Aromas of macerated black cherries, boysenberry and a touch of graphite but always remaining tight. The palate has good depth, nice grip but not over-bearing. There is certainly a lot of unresolved new oak here and this certainly needs time with a slightly furry finish with notes of cedar and blackberry with just a touch of tar. Brooding intensity – one for the cellar (perhaps akin to the ’90?) Drink 2015-2030+. Tasted January 2009. 94+

Rich, seductive, spicy, exotic, masses of ripe fruits. Full and rich, quite smokey, exotic, seductive, but also with tremendous power. Richness and length. From 2017.

Dark red-ruby. Multidimensional nose offers deep aromas of currant, cedar, coffee, tobacco and minerals. The palate offers a rare combination of sweetness, energy and depth, with superb grip and a layered texture to the flavors of plum, cedar, tobacco and minerals. The finish features sweet, noble tannins and outstanding length. I find this more complete and ultimately more exciting than the 2003, but this will need at least a decade of cellaring. (The 2006 was in the middle of a racking and difficult to taste, but this wine conveyed the same impression of ripeness, energy and structure that my sample did last spring.)

As usual, this superb Pauillac possesses an inky/blue/black color in addition to a big, sweet nose of graphite, charcoal, burning embers, black currant liqueur, and toasty vanillin from new oak casks. Full-bodied with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, the 2005 Pichon Baron is more backward than the blockbuster 2003 or prodigious 2000. Nevertheless, it is a superb effort whose power, length, and tannic structure suggest it should be at its peak between 2015-2035.

Grande expression fruitée et magnifique équilibre. Un vin riche mais frais et structuré, aux tanins racés et nobles.

Perfumed red and black fruit, smoky but not closed. Cool silky fresh tannins. Delicious.

A deep blue/purple color is followed by classic, sweet aromas of blueberries, creme de cassis, graphite, incense, spring flowers, and toasty vanillin from new oak. With full body and beautiful ripeness, purity, and depth, this atypically precocious 2005 will benefit from 6-8 years of bottle age, and last for 25-30 years. It is dramatically superior to its across the road neighbor, Pichon Lalande.

Yield of 35 hectoliters per hectare and a final blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc have produced a black/purple-colored 2005 boasting gorgeous intensity as well as sweet, classic creme de cassis notes interwoven with incense, camphor, and graphite. Powerful and full-bodied with abundant glycerin, high tannin, endearing freshness and sweetness, and a long, 45-second finish, this hefty (13.6% alcohol) Pauillac should be at its finest between 2012-2030+.

Deep healthy crimson. Mellow, mild, very sophisticated nose. Still extremely reticent and very dry and gentleman's club-like savoury with what tastes like an exceptionally heavy charge of tannins. Oddly this is almost in the traditional Latour style just as Latour has moved on from it to add extra fruit to that slightly austere frameword. A very long term proposition surely. I think my mark stands for how it tastes now, although it may well develop in the very long term into something much more alluring. Drink 2018-30. 17+

Un excellent Pichon-Longueville, dans la lignée du 2000: robe de bonne intensité, joli fruit, bouche souplement construite mais avec de la force, énergie, tanin solide et fin, allonge épicée.

Lovely blackberry and toasted oak character follows through to a full-bodied palate, with round and juicy tannins and a long, very fruity finish. Yummy. Not sure this is up to 2003, but clearly outstanding. —J.S.
