Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. What a fabulous Pomerol this is. The nose creeps up on you, dishing out blackberry, pain grille and fruitcake, later chestnuts, unfurling slowing in the glass. It is soft and bashful. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It is succulent and ripe with toasty oak towards the chestnut tinged finish that will need further bottle age to integrate. There is a wonderful peppery note on the aftertaste. Is this the Trotanoy that dares to challenge the supremacy of Petrus? Pourquoi pas! Tasted January 2013.

Bright ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, mocha and iron, plus a whiff of beefsteak tomato. Then superripe, plush and seriously rich on the palate; began with a faint bitterness but grew fresher and more shapely with aeration. Really fills the mouth with dark cherry, underbrush and mineral flavors. Finishes with substantial talc-like tannins and terrific rising length. Ultimately very classy, but I'd cellar this for eight or ten years.

An absolutely prodigious wine, the dense purple 2009 Trotanoy exudes extraordinary notes of minerals, forest floor, sweet black currants and black cherry jam along with floral notes and graphite. Very full-bodied, with silky tannins, fabulous opulence and palate presence, this terrific wine should be at its best in 7-10 years and last for 20 or more. Think of it as a more concentrated, “bigger” version of the extraordinary 1998. (98+ points)

A deep nose of blueberries, with chocolate mousse that turns to licorice and hints of rose petal. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins that fill your mouth. But they are always soft and caressing. They last for minutes. I love the texture to this wine; it is like plush velvet. Best in 2018, but so inviting now.

This sports a dark, chewy side for now, with overt charcoal and roasted apple wood notes, along with plenty of smoldering tobacco flavors. The core is still a bit chunky as well, with roasted fig, blackberry paste and steeped black currant fruit. But the underlying structure is refined, despite its density, and the finish is very long and purely rendered. Best from 2018 through 2035. 2,250 cases made. –JM

Très ample, tannique et voluptueux, Trotanoy impressionne par sa matière exceptionnelle qui dépasse le célèbre 1982 par sa densité et même le légendaire 1961 par sa longueur. La robe est très sombre. Nez fumé et épicé splendide. En bouche, l’attaque est très ample, elle est suivie d’une matière généreuse, le vin est impressionnant, milieu de bouche, tannique, volumineux, gros potentiel.

14% alcohol. 80M, 20CF The J-P Moueix tasting was of a very high standard this year, but this was the stand out wine for me. It’s very deeply coloured, showing rich, sumptuous aromas of coffee bean, plum and blackberry. The palate is beautifully structured, even at this young age, with lovely balance between tannins, oak, acidity and fruit. An exceptional Pomerol . 20+ years

Full, deep red-ruby. Sexy aromas of ripe strawberry, chocolate-covered raspberry, mocha and smoke are nicely lifted by a whiff of pure violet. Captivating and exotic Pomerol, with lush flavors of superripe raspberry, roasted meat and musky coffee. In spite of its juicy sweetness, this is rather backward today, with substantial brooding tannins calling for years of patience. Unbelievably seamless and powerful, this enchanting wine's finish goes on for minutes. A monumental Trotanoy that has the perfume of a grand cru Burgundy.

Il se hisse dans le quintet de tête des meilleurs pomerols. Une réussite qui n'est pas sans rappeller celle - mémorable - de 1982. Bouche meolleuse, tanins savoureux, fruit et boisé élégants (93% merlot, 3% cabernet franc). Eric Murisasco, qui prend la relève de Jean-Claude Berrouet, a frappé un grand coup!

Extrem dunkles Purpur mit lila und violetten Reflexen. Viel Lakritze, Trüffel, Maulbeeren und Brombeeren in der Nase, zeigt eine gewaltige Tiefe, Rauchnoten und schwarze Edelhölzer. Am Gaumen kompakt, fleischig, aber mit derart feinen Tanninen, wie man sie bei einem jungen Trotanoy noch selten erlebt hat, Power und Finesse, von seiner Klasse dem 1998er sehr ähnlich, womöglich sogar dem legendären 1996er. Wer klassische Pomerols liebt, kommt an diesem Wein heuer nicht vorbei. 2020-2050

Fruits noirs, cerise, gras, moelleux, dense, tannique, beaucoup d'allure, tendu, matière serrée, frais, dense, fin. "Dans le millésime, le vin de goutte a pris le meilleur et on est prudent sur les presses. La matière première était vraiment belle et les degrés d'alcool étaient élevés, et donc on a extrait davantage, avec l'alcool, il fallait donc se montrer prudent", commente Eric Murisasco, responsable technique de la maison Moueix. Splendide réussite, avec un Trotanoy svelte et long, au tanin fin et délicat. C'est d'un raffinement velouté sans guère d'équivalence et d'une profondeur remarquable. Grand style, l'un de meilleurs millésimes de Trotanoy de l'époque contemporaine.

I don’t know what the 1961 Trotanoy tasted like in its youth, but the 2009 unquestionably surpasses the 1982 (which was the finest effort since the 1961) and eclipses anything made since. By far the greatest Trotanoy of my professional career, the 2009 boasts a dense plum/purple color as well as a meaty, earthy nose buttressed by enormous quantities of black fruits, cherries, and spice. Abundant glycerin, viscosity, purity, and elegance are all part of this massive, exuberant, powerful Trotanoy. One of the most prodigious wines of the vintage, it should come into its own in 8-10 years, and last 30-40 years thereafter. (Tasted once.) Drink 2018-2058. (97-100*) points

The big, rusty, old-school styled Trotanoy is one of the finest wines of the vintage! A wine of precision and multi-dimensional flavor. Its saturated ruby color is accompanied by stunning perfumes of white flower, lavender, cherry liqueur, cassis, blueberry, and liquefied-minerals. Such pure aromas followed by a silky-textured, finessed, extraordinarily intellectual fruit. This medium to full-bodied, large-scaled Red offers tremendous fruit and tannin, but, keeps its pristine style and finesse. A gorgeously intense wine! Maturity period 2017-2039+ (96-98+)

A nose of dark chocolate and crushed raspberry evolves to blackberry and ripe raspberry. Full-bodied, with chewy and powerful tannins that leave a rich and mouthpuckering finish. This is a big and powerful Trot. Wow. Haven't tasted a Trot like this in decades.

Very dark. Juicy, savoury, complete on the nose. Very ripe with some liquorice and treacle toffee. Extremely opulent and reverberant. Lots of black notes on the palate. Exotic and with savoury dry finish. Really interesting wine. Dense and almost tarry but without the drying tannins on the finish sometimes associated with that character. Well done! Very long and satisfying. But dramatic. No prisoners' style of wine. Drink 2018-2032
