Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The La Conseillante ‘09 has a very seductive bouquet with lifted kirsch, mulberry and light honeyed tones – all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a sensual but insistent entry. There are layers of ripe dark cherry, spicebox, black pepper and Provençal herbs with great weight and persistency on the finish. Superb. Tasted January 2013. (95+ points)

Bright ruby-red. Knockout perfume of red berries, dark cherry, minerals, flowers, licorice, tobacco and tarragon, complemented by sexy sweet oak. Suave, glossy and silky, but given energy and lift by its cabernet franc component. Captivating vanilla, coconut and spice notes add complexity and lift to the vibrant fruit flavors. No excessive sweetness here. Still a baby but already boasts lovely early balance. Wonderfully smooth Pomerol with terrific finishing lift.

The competition between the 2009, 2005 and 2000 La Conseillante will be interesting to follow over the next twenty years. There was more of a selection process at this estate in 2009 than there was in 2000, resulting in a beautiful Pomerol offering notes of mulberries, sweet cherries, spring flowers, raspberries and truffles. The color is a healthy deep plum/ruby/purple and the wine is medium to full-bodied with silky tannins, a broad, layered mouthfeel and wonderful freshness as well as length. This gorgeous, complex, Burgundian-styled Pomerol will be drinkable in 4-6 years and should keep for 30-40. (The 1970 is still alive and that was not nearly as well made as the 2009.)

Blackberries, violets and licorice, with hints of lavender. Full body, with phenomenal texture of ultra-fine tannins and subtle and intriguing fruit character. Goes on for minutes. Try in 2020.

This delivers stunning toasted spice, mocha and black tea aromas, while the core of plum, blackberry and fig flavors is still rather reticent. The long finish is liberally laced with a racy graphite note, while the perfumy accent pervades. This will be a suave head-turner when it rounds into form. Best from 2018 through 2030. 4,000 cases made. –JM

14.2% alcohol. 81M, 19CF This is a comparatively forward La Conseillante, with slightly higher alcohol than normal. There’s a fair amount of oak here, with sweet fruitcake and raspberry fruit flavours, but the tannins are supple and there’s enough acidity to keep the wine from cloying. A wine for hedonists, this is more of a medium term red than a keeper. 10+ years.

(81% merlot and 19% cabernet franc; 14.2% alcohol; pH 3.75) Bright, full red-ruby. Pure, penetrating aromas of black cherry, violet, licorice and minerals offer lovely perfumed lift. Then fresh, bright and sweet in the mouth, with a distinctly modern aspect to the pure, intense flavors of black cherry, bitter chocolate and flinty minerality. Very smoothly tannic and fine-grained, this remarkably polished and perfumed Pomerol finishes very long, with an airy lightness of touch and lingering mint and pepper nuances.

Now that La Conseillante is making a second wine with more severe selection, think of the 2009 as a version of the 2000 on steroids. This is never going to be a blockbuster wine, because the terroir just seems to produce silky, elegant wines, but in this case, the 2009 has an extra kick and level of concentration that is unprecedented. Inky bluish purple, with an extraordinary nose of framboise, black raspberries, spring flowers, spice box, and a hint of truffle, the wine has great depth, full-bodied opulence, silky tannins, enormous power and richness, but again, a vibrancy and uplift that are just freakish in this vintage. That’s one of the great hallmarks of 2009 and one that will always stand out over the next 30 years. This wine should be drinkable in 5-7 years and last 40 or more. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2015-2055

One of the top wines of the vintage! This is a profound La Conseillante exceeding the brilliant 2008 from every angle. Its deep opaque/purple color preceeds aromas of blackberry, scorched earth, flower spells, pencil-dust, and spice infused mushroom juice. This is flavorful with huge intensity, a full-body and density. The richness is finessed and the length has to be experienced due to its savory palate, amazing complexity, and layers of depth. A noteworthy Pomerol and certainly one of the highlights of the vintage. I cant get enough of this multi-dimensional offering from La Conseillante! Maturity period 2016-2034.

Deep colour, fresh and beautifully perfumed, this has a lovely seamless fruit quality, superb concentration and richness with a dimension of intensity and red berry / mulberry flavour that's lacking in most others; it's concentrated and full-flavoured but has a freshness, elegance, fine-boned structure and finesse that makes it exciting. Up there with Le Pin, Le Gay, Vieux Château Certan and Trotanoy as one of the great Right bank wines of the vintage.

Relatively low-key nose. Lots of energy here, and luscious sweetness, but I still find a lack of terroir for what one might expect of this over-performer and the vintage. Just a little bit formless. Drink 2020-2032.

Such wonderful clarity to this wine, with violets, black and exotic fruits. Fabulous nose. Full-bodied, with superfine tannins and a silky, silky finish. Such beauty. Really stunning. Class.

Picked 19-28 Sep. Very dark. Though no darker than the Duo. Not much nose – less expressive than the Duo! Very rich and intense. Super-ripe. Taken to an extreme of ripeness? A bit overripe. Lacks acidity. I think I prefer the Duo. Heavy with a bit of tarriness on the finish. I’d love to taste this again but on this showing I fear there is not enough acid and too obvious tannin. When I subsequently tasted this blind, I wrote ' Sweet and almost Argentine on the nose! None of Bordeaux’s subtlety here. I can’t really see the point. And awfully drying on the finish.' Drink 2015-2023
