Château d'Armailhac - Pauillac 2009

Nature was particularly kind in 2009, providing conditions that favoured the vegetation cycle and helped the grapes to reach full maturity.
Winter was a little colder than usual, though in the period to March the region had 204 hours of sunshine more than the average for the last thirty years.
April was very wet and May often stormy. Flowering took place rapidly and evenly around 5 June.
Summer set in from mid-June, bringing remarkable levels of sunshine and little rainfall. The very fine weather and high level of hydric stress, barely alleviated by a few showers, enabled the grapes to ripen slowly to full maturity. Temperatures in August were 1.4° C higher than the average. The ideal weather continued into September as cool nights alternated with hot days.
The weather, encouraging the concentration of aromas and flavours and the accumulation of anthocyans, brought the crop to harvest in perfect condition.
Picking began with the Merlot on 23 September and ended with the Cabernet Sauvignon on 6 October. The grapes were extremely healthy, containing plenty of sugar, colour and fruit and showing exceptional potential. 2009 will undoubtedly go down as a vintage to match the finest.

The 2009 Château d'Armailhac has a lovely nose, the Cabernet Sauvignon component more expressive compared to my previous encounter, graphite infusing the generous black fruit that is in keeping with the style. The palate is medium-bodied with touches of cherry liqueur and spice on the entry, the Merlot in the driving seat with good acidity and a lively, spicy finish with tobacco, hickory and black pepper on the aftertaste. It is a delicious d'Armailhac that is just about ready to rock 'n roll. Tasted August 2016.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The d'Armailhac '09 has a very refined bouquet with kirsch, fresh date and blackberry - all very refined and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, slightly oppressive tannins. There is impressive fruit intensity with layers of dusky blackcurrant and dark plum. I was initially mean with my score but it certainly improved in the glass. Tasted January 2013.

Moderately saturated dark red. Expressive nose offers redcurrant, tobacco leaf, licorice and cedar. A spicy, energetic midweight with enticing sweetness to its juicy raspberry, redcurrant and tree bark flavors. Finishes with serious dusty tannins and lovely lingering red berry flavor.

The finest d’Armailhac I have tasted to date, the 2009 is largely Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) blended with a big wallop of Merlot (25%) and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its dense purple color is followed by a big, sweet kiss of asphalt, black currants, mocha, barbecue smoke, cedar and spice. This medium to full-bodied, well-made, impressively endowed Pauillac should drink well for 20+ years.

Wonderful aromas of blackberries, blueberries and bramble berries. Full-bodied, with ripe tannins and wonderful fruit. There is really a gourmand style to it. So delicious. Fruity and velvety. So much flavor. Why wait? But will improve for years.

This has density, structure and drive, offering seriously dark baker's chocolate, plum, currant and fig flavours all wound up tightly by singed cedar, tar and dark tapenade notes, with a tight, mineral-driven finish. Needs a little time to unwind. Best from 2013 through 2023-J.M.

Robe sombre. Nez fruits rouges. En bouche, l’attaque est souple, le milieu de bouche charmeur, avec une belle matière. Un séducteur. 60 % cabernet-sauvignon, 24 % merlot, 14 % cabernet-franc, 2 % petit-verdot.

(a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 14% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; pH 3.78; 13.2% alcohol) Deep red with purple highlights. The pretty, spicy, perfumed aromas of blackcurrants and raspberries leap from the glass. Light and fragrant on the palate, with excellent balance between the lively acids and the pretty red fruit and mineral flavors. This smoothly tannic midweight improves considerably with air, gaining in complexity and finishing with intense, very pure red and black cherry flavors. To my mind, the best Armailhac ever, and one that shows a very recognizable and pristine cabernet franc presence. Readers who enjoy classically styled Bordeaux may want to think about this gloriously restrained and refined wine, which is less obviously ripe than many other '09s and should age spectacularly well.

Tasted at Château Mouton-Rothschild and at a negociant. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. This has a fragrant, perfumed nose with a Margaux-like personality. Taut blackberry and bilberry fruit, good definition, coiled up aromatics, becoming stonier with aeration, good minerality coming through, perhaps stricter than recent vintages of d’Armailhac. The palate has a very smooth entry, supple tannins, citric acidity, very pure and generous, lovely sense of refinement towards the tannic, blackberry, stony finish. Perhaps a little more conservative at this stage, the oak is bound to buff it up by time of bottling. Tasted March 2010.

60 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 24 % Merlot, 14 % Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. 2016–2032

This may be the finest d’Armailhac I have ever tasted. Made in a textured, full-bodied, sumptuous style, it is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and the balance primarily Cabernet Franc with a tiny dosage of Petit Verdot. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue along with floral, red and black currant, cedar, and spice characteristics. Deep, medium to full-bodied, and impressively pure as well as long, it should drink well for 25 years. (Tasted three times.) Drink 2010-2035.(90-93*) points.

The delicious d'Armailhac boasts a deep ruby/purple color along with blackberries, crème de cassis, and lead-pencil dust scents. This is good wine with its medium to full-body, generous fruit, approachability, and deep flavors of cherry and blueberry. It is caressing on the palate and more lusciously-styled in fruit, making it poised for early consumption. This vintage will be a crowd pleaser with a precocious personality. Maturity period 2013-2024.

60% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot, 14% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot, this shows a goodish youthful ruby colour, pleasant nose a tad closed, quite attractive fresh dark berry fruits quality, a tad dry and muscular on the tannin front, but not excessively so; quite good but seems a tad hollow on the mid-plate, as if waiting for the fruit, if it's there, to come though and shine, but I’m pretty confident it’s there.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. Picked 23 Sep – 6 Oct. Very dark crimson. Inky and fragrant with just a hint of farmyard. Black cherries for the first time on the left bank! Less obviously ripe and supple than many 2009s on the nose but then on the palate there’s a sweet start and then a pretty chewy, slightly sinewy finish. Sweet and polished – not too much soul but an awful lot of effective artifice! Reasonably complete. More traditional tannin management than some. Fairly chunky. (16.5+) Drink 2017-2030
