Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2004 horizontal tasting. This has a very composed bouquet with pure blackberry and cedar scents, a touch of antique furniture polish and Hoi Sin. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, a crisp line of acidity and plenty of energy and vigour on the finish. Not a complex 2004, but this light-hearted Meyney is a decent Saint Estephe. Tasted March 2014.

The 2004 Meyney has a simple, ripe nose of redcurrant, cranberry and a touch of cigar box. It seems to have more Merlot than other Saint Estephe wines with a nice touch of cassis towards the finish. A comparatively “dainty” wine, very approachable but well crafted. Drink now-2012. Tasted November 2008.

Following so many terrific successes in the 1970s and 1980s, it’s sad to see this property producing so many mediocre wines. The 2004 is solidly made, but uninspiring, with rugged tannins, good fruit, and a monolithic, one-dimensional personality. It can be drunk over the next decade.

Lots of blackberry aromas, with hints of cedar, follow through to a full-bodied palate. A chunky wine, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Needs time. Very well done for the vintage. Best after 2010. 14,220 cases made.
