Castle Grand Puy Lacoste - Pauillac 2008

The climatic conditions were very contrasted during the vegetative cycle of the vine, the vineyard had to put up with a capricious meteor: knowing extreme climatic alternations with periods of heavy rains but also periods of big insolations. The work in the vineyard with a very meticulous stripping, was still the key to success to maintain a good health of the grapes. The main player in the quality of this vintage was once again the home of the famous "Indian summer" from 14 September to 18 October. A lot of wind associated with the high temperatures of the day and the cool nights allowed to obtain a very beautiful phenolic maturity. This vintage with multiple twists which after worrying the winemaker and cellar master proves to be a compromise of finesse and power. We find the plot of beautiful vintages where the elegance of the fruit combines with ripe tannins and greedy. Manual harvest. Double sort before and after destemming. Traditional vinification with long vatting (about 3 weeks) Aging in oak barrels with 65% new barrels.

Fruits rouges, cerise cruite, sous-bois, encore marqué par le fruit, bouche fine, élégate, équilibrée. Bonne longueur. Accrocheur en finale, demande à vieillir.

Tasted from a bottle opened at the chateau, since the one in Southwold was not showing so well, the 2008 has a lovely, lifted bouquet of blackberry, blood orange, crushed stone, cedar and tar. It is much more vigorous than the previous bottle. The palate is medium-bodied is very supple on the entry with crisp acidity. Smooth and harmonious, the oak needing time to subsume into the fabric of the wine. The finish is fresh, vibrant, nicely poised with good grip and a fine, supple raspberry and briary.

Full red-ruby. Brooding aromas of medicinal blackcurrant, plum, menthol, spices and cocoa powder. Lush and fine-grained but youthfully closed, offering moderate sweetness today but noteworthy breadth for the vintage. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and very good length. 91+

Unsmoked cigar tobacco intermixed with plums, red and black currants presented in an evolved style characterize this dark plum/garnet-colored effort. Medium-bodied, delicious and evolved, it is best consumed over the next 10-12 years. Drink 2011-2023

Tasted at the chateau. The nose is very fresh, leaping out the glass, with fresh blackberry, raspberry, a touch of gravel and graphite. It has brilliant definition and focus. The palate is tannic on the entry, a masculine Pauillac as always, a little austere but not excessively so. Ripe fresh black fruits, a touch of soy and cedar, vibrant and focused towards the tannic finish with a saline aftertaste that develops more silkiness as it aerates in the glass. Beautiful. Drink 2015-2040. Tasted October 2010.

Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, tiefe Farbe.

(69% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot and 3% cabernet franc) Medium-deep red. Inviting, deep aromas of blackcurrant and ripe plum, with a hint of licorice. Very appealing sweet black and red fruit flavors on the palate; shows a stiffer tannic spine than Haut Batailley from the same owner, but the tannins are also smoother and riper. Finishes pleasantly long, with an obvious cinnamon touch and very good balance. Another wine that may have been more successful in '08 than in either '06 or '07. (Ian D'Agata)

Recht dunkles Rubin, lila Rand, aufhellend. 2018 – 2038

Not a blockbuster such as the 2005 or 2000, the 2008 Grand Puy Lacoste is an elegant, deep ruby/purple-tinged, pretty Pauillac offering plenty of red and black currant fruit interwoven with touches of spice box and tobacco leaf characteristics. Fresh acidity, medium body, and a pleasant, long finish with excellent depth as well as ripeness suggest it will be a delicate, finesse styled offering to enjoy over the next 10-15 years. 89-91+

Dense red, fine concentration of berry fruits on the nose and palate, purity and length, still rather reserved. Drink 2015-22.

This has a lovely, far more expressive nose than I expected with black cherries, a touch of iodine and violets (redolent of the superlative 2006) with superb definition. Just a faint hint of oyster shells. The palate is full-bodied, fully ripe tannins, a little more rounded than usual but superb depth, a wine that really caresses the palate. Blackberry, a touch of briary and cedar with a dash of vanillary new oak towards the finish. Superb length. Up there with Pichon Lalande. This is a more feminine GPL compared to other vintages, but one imbued with great breeding. Excellent.

Offers cassis and dried raisin on the nose, with hints of flowers. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a clean finish. I would like to see a little more fruit in this.
